Magnesium Oxide Ceramic

Magnesium oxide ceramics are a typical new type of ceramics and also belong to traditional refractory materials. Magnesium oxide itself has strong corrosion resistance to alkaline metal solutions. The prepared magnesium oxide ceramic products have excellent chemical properties and stability against metal corrosion and do not work with magnesium, nickel, uranium, aluminum, molybdenum, etc. In a nitrogen atmosphere, magnesium oxide ceramics can work stably up to 2300°C, so magnesium oxide is a key material in the advanced processes of the modern metallurgical industry.

MgO ceramic tube content: 99% MgO. Edgetech can provide custom MgO ceramic parts upon request.

Properties of magnesium oxide

-High-temperature resistance, good high-temperature stability: can be used stably in high-temperature environment of 1600~1800℃, with a maximum temperature resistance of 2300 degrees Celsius

-High density

-High purity, which can effectively avoid the contamination of samples at high temperatures

-The melting point of magnesium oxide is as high as 2800℃, and it has strong corrosion resistance to metals and slag

-Strong corrosion resistance to alkaline metal solutions

-Magnesium oxide does not react chemically with many metals. In an inert atmosphere, even at a temperature of up to 1800℃, magnesium oxide will not react with metals such as nickel, molybdenum, and niobium

Applications of Magnesium Oxide Ceramic

-MgO transparent ceramics

MgO transparent ceramics have the advantages of low density, high-temperature resistance, high insulation, excellent mechanical properties, high infrared transmittance, good chemical stability, and low emissivity. It is a high-performance infrared window and sensor protection material.

– MgAl2O4 transparent ceramics

MgAl2O4 transparent ceramics have excellent optical transmittance that almost covers the ultraviolet to the infrared region (190nm<λ<6000nm). It also has the advantages of high hardness, high strength, high-temperature resistance, low emissivity, sand erosion and rain erosion resistance, and impact resistance. It has been widely used in transparent armor, missile windows, and fairings. MgAl2O4 is formed by the reaction of MgO and Al2O3 in a stoichiometric ratio of 1:1, and MgO accounts for 28.2% by mass.

-Co2+ doped MgAl2O4 crystal

Co2+ doped magnesium aluminum spinel (Co: MgAl2O4) crystal is an effective material for passive Q-switched solid-state lasers working in the near-infrared region. The high peak power pulse laser generated by its passive Q-switching has the characteristics of less damage to human eyes, strong penetration ability, low transmission loss, and strong photoelectric countermeasure ability. It can be widely used in space optical communication, battlefield rapid ranging, and laser radar of unmanned equipment. The mass proportion of 99.995% high-purity MgO in Co2+ doped MgAl2O4 crystal is similar to that of MgAl2O4 transparent ceramics.

– MgO-Y2O3 composite ceramics

The “pinning effect” between MgO and nano-Y2O3 is used to inhibit the growth of grains. MgO-Y2O3 composite ceramics with mechanical properties higher than single phase and optical transmittance not inferior to single phase can be prepared. It can manufacture transparent armor, missile hoods, high-temperature observation windows, and aviation windows. In MgO-Y2O3 composite ceramics, the volume ratio of MgO to Y2O3 is usually 1:1, and MgO accounts for about 41.7% by mass.

-MgO-based microwave dielectric ceramics

With the update and iteration of mobile communications and satellite communication technologies, people have higher and higher requirements for communication time and frequency bands, making low-dielectric and high-Q ceramics a research hotspot. On the one hand, MgO ceramics themselves have excellent dielectric properties (εr=9.1, tanδ<1.6×10-6), and are an ideal microwave dielectric substrate material for 5G communications. On the other hand, MgO-TiO2-based (mainly MgTiO3) microwave dielectric ceramics have important application prospects in electronic components such as resonators and filters due to their excellent dielectric properties. MgTiO3 is formed by the reaction of MgO and TiO2 in a stoichiometric ratio of 1:1, and MgO accounts for 33.3% by mass.
