Yttria Stabilized Zirconia
Zirconia is a widely used ceramic material. It has three phases with different structures, namely the monoclinic phase, tetragonal phase, and cubic phase. Different phase contents can have a greater impact on the performance of zirconia ceramic materials. At present, the most common materials are yttrium-stabilized zirconia materials.
Yttria Stabilized zirconia ceramics are zirconia-toughened ceramics prepared with yttria (Y2O3) as a stabilizer. Usually, when the mole fraction of yttria is 2% to 3%, it is called “Yttria Stabilized tetragonal phase zirconia polycrystalline”; when the yttria content mole fraction is more than 8%, it is called “Yttria Stabilized cubic zirconia polycrystalline” Polycrystalline”.
Among them, 3Y-TZP (3% (mol fraction) Y2O3) material has the best mechanical properties, It is also the most commonly used zirconia ceramic material at present. The properties of 3Y-TZP prepared by different methods vary greatly. To obtain zirconia ceramic materials with higher mechanical properties, the material’s grain size and phase composition can be changed by controlling the sintering temperature, adding additives, etc.
3mol% yttrium-stabilized zirconia ceramic (3Y-TZP): This is a tetragonal zirconia polycrystalline ceramic with 3mol% yttrium oxide as a stabilizer. It has the highest strength and toughness and is currently the most commonly used type of zirconia. Zirconium ceramic material. It can be prepared by traditional powder metallurgy or sol-gel method.
5mol% yttrium stabilized zirconia ceramic (5Y-TZP): This is a tetragonal zirconia polycrystalline ceramic with 5mol% yttria as a stabilizer. It has high strength and toughness but is slightly lower than 3Y-TZP. It can be prepared by sol-gel method or hydrothermal method.
8mol% yttrium stabilized zirconia ceramic (8Y-CSZ): This is a cubic phase zirconia polycrystalline ceramic with 8mol% yttria as a stabilizer. It has low strength and toughness, but high conductivity and Thermal conductivity. It can be prepared by the sol-gel method or co-precipitation method.

Application of Yttria Stabilized Zirconia
YSZ has excellent corrosion resistance and mechanical strength and shows significant resistance to oxidation and reduction in high-temperature environments. It is widely used in aerospace, shipbuilding, automotive, biomedicine, and other fields.
-Used to make cutting tools, bearings, pumps, valves, seals, biomedical implants, etc.
-Used to make high-temperature and corrosion-resistant parts, such as electrolyte diaphragms, catalyst carriers, sensors, etc.
-Used to make electronic components, solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC), superconducting materials, etc.
While YSZ is well suited for demanding mechanical applications, it may not be suitable for very high-temperature applications as it is subject to grain boundary sliding; this occurs when prolonged exposure to heat causes the material to change from a strong tetragonal phase to a weaker monoclinic phase. Similarly, it may not be suitable for warm and humid conditions because its properties deteriorate when exposed to water vapor. Therefore, the YSZ is best suited for operation in dry and moderate-temperature conditions.
